Rand demanded that the entire speech that Howard Roark gives at the end of the film be read exactly as in the original novel. Vidor initially agreed, but when shooting commenced on the scene, he decided to tighten it up a bit. Upon hearing this, Rand called the head of the studio demanding that the whole speech be filmed. Rand won out, and Vidor filmed the entire speech. The scene goes on for nearly six minutes, one of the longest speeches ever in a feature film.

ReplyDeleteAfter watched this movie, I realize that to be a good designer should always have clear concept in mind, should always know what the right thing to do is and what your purpose for design is even though your idea is against general thoughts. Moreover, being a designer has the responsibility to lead people to live with the right way of living.
In Howard Roark’s courtroom speech, I think he’s trying to emphasis the importance of freedom of individual creative works and to point out the wrong concept of excessive self-sacrificing in society. In my opinion, I think the individual creative works should be encouraged and be respected because it leads our future to a right direction and it has the power to change the world. However, I’m not agreed that people can live completely egoistic and no self-sacrificing because, after all, humans are collective animals and cannot survive alone.

ReplyDeleteAll the times I confuse about Designer's roles. Cause it is very difficult to choose 'What is the first? Client's need or Designer's decision?' in this times.
When I saw this move, I could realize that a good designer need to make sure of 'Own design definition'. If Designer's definition is right and clear all the situations will must be whose side. Like this movie's hero Howard Roark. It was great examples of Creators attitude.

"I agreed to design Cortlandt for the purpose of seeing it erected as I designed it and for no other reason. That was the price I set for my work. I was not paid." as Howard Roark said.. I think As a designer, we need to keep in mind that "design","work it self" is a payment not the only money. Add to this, taking responsibility for their own works shold be fllowed. Sometimes collective action, massmedia, and fad something like this block designer's creativity but we shouldn't miss the orginal role of Designer.

ReplyDelete‘Creation’ is supposed to be joyful work. To do that, we need to reconsider a word, ‘compromise’ against ‘Creator’. Why don’t we use a word, ‘collaboration’ instead of ‘compromise’? I don’t think there is no one who accomplish final brainchild all by oneself in real field except certain art works. Select good possibilities among barrier-free ideas from coworkers and pull out the greatest common divisor from them. Sometimes we meet unexpected brilliant solution doing this process. I’d like to call this kind of job as creation work and I don’t think this is ‘compromise’ or ‘parasite’ We don’t need to create with whole bunch of pains and loneliness because of compulsion given by a word, ‘compromise’. Let’s enjoy ‘creation work’.

As a designer who lives in modern times, I have thought that I want to be a designer who is stubborn in his part such as Roark and flexible to accept different opinions of others.

If thinking leans to one side, there will be many problems from that.
So I don’t want to compare having a firm belief in design and suggest his thinking to other people with designing what people want to.

Designer`s obstinacy and positive selfishness deserve to respect at any society.
Howard Roark had a strong volition. He rejected client`s claim that chainging his work.
since he thought that the claim is not fair in his mind as a designer, so He blew up his work instead of revising.
In fact, I totally agree with having self-esteem as a designer.
But it must accompany with understanding each other.
If it`s imposible, you must find another way.
so I think designers must have a faith and abillity to persuade people to think like her/himself.
If you want to keep own design with proper reason, clients will agree with you.

ReplyDeleteI found that communication is also important to desginer. If Roark tried to persuade public about his philosophy not just stick it, he need not defend himself in front of grand jury. I think he could negotiate with public because he had his straight and clear philosophy. Designer lives in the real world, so he/she should understand requests of public. They may stand opposed to his/her philosophy, but designer has to teach public if he/she don't want to give up. Yes, the most necessary point is designer must keep his/her own philosophy in mind and not be shaken. And open his/her mind to communicate with public.
(+) The story of this movie went really fast. I was suprised at the 'old' movie.

Designers have to follow thier own belief about their work, of course. The belief which cannot be changed by client's or the mass of people's opinion.
But designers have to communicate with other people at the same time.
To do that, they have to wake up the people!
They have to guide them to right direction.
They have to teach them what 'design' is.
This is the designer's role.
Designers are the 'pioneer'!
Like Howard Roark said, they would suffer by following thier belief. But, finally they are gonna win!, and people will follow them.

ReplyDeleteActor Haward got his own strong expectation. A client asked to correct, he rejected strictly but although they enforced their correction, he blew up edifice at last. In fact, I agree that he or she answers for one's design and get for firmed expression.
But not always push your own expression. Only for discuss about style, Most of Korean Design consulting companies come to term with actual. Rapid, and So irregulary style block off automatically. Not be sold in market. More than renovated, normal style is main standard. So understanding and compromising is necessary for designer. Not only compromise for client and designer, but also mass and design. If your own design has your own expressing, it'll be understand your partner.
Populace developes. They has their own eyes. Especially thousands of design educated people is also consumer. That's the proof of develop. But extremely designer leads all basis.
All styles turn down first time and slowly sink into the populace. At last I came to conclusion that designer gets balance and acts all two things. Compromised design for living. Outdoing design for education. Between two values nearer, our social experiences more higher design.

Many different kinds of people exist to the world
The people who have created necessary things for life to be a little more better than it during them exist. Designers think that it is just them.
What they are made much of most when creation works is result created practice asceticism, and there will be it, but the thing that is firstly important thinks when they have created anything that a branch is faith of oneself.
That is, you can talk about thing that you have made it by any thought and any intention to people, and you are able to have been used to what kind of methods to them, and I am most basic, and you canl present a correct direction, and I think.
A designer can think in entrances of the counterpart who isn't own entrance, and you look up them and negotiation regarding own thought, and all were able to do together it, and I think.

Howard Roark reached his ideal.
I believe everyone wants their ideal to come true.
But they can’t do as Howard did.
We are struggling to keep up our client’s demand in the real world.
I’m not trying to say you don’t need to have your own opinion on that,
But keep expressing your own philosophy, thinking and soul by designing
so that they understand you.
In the end, I believe someone will recognize you.

ReplyDeleteIn the speech, the uncompromising individualist, Roack, explains why the creator is more important than other people and why a creator must be respected. I totally agree with him in this point that individual creative works should be respected and have the right not to be changed. On the other hand, there is also disagreement of his viewpoint in altruism. He said that a man thinks and works alone, but I think a man never always stand alone since all people are related to each other. Thus, designer should consider public, in my private opinion.

His persistent attitude is followed by suffering in capitalism, although I admire his uncompromising design and philosophy. ReplyDeleteDuring through the movie, the whold speech of Roark reminded me of Plato’s Cave. People give up there own philasophy so easly and follow other people’s opinion. Peple just want to stay out of trouble.
In our culture, it happens a lot.
We live in matalial world. Money rules everthing. Money is the most important thing in this world. Now, No one question about it. Because We are conditioned that way. I blieve Desiners do have resposibility for this culture because they act big part of creating culture and run matalial world. Designers are paid for their design and it is easy to say “I’ve changed my design because they say so, they pays my bill what’s the problem”or “Whatelse can I do, I could get fired”
In Roark’s speech, he was trying to say when we see that the "threat" we're about to battle is really just a shadow. We are our own enemy. So BE REAL DESIGNER WITH YOUR OWN PHILASOPHY, NOT A SLAVE OF A SHADOW.

Designer have to think about a diversity of opinions of public. But,nothing can shake that the time, the public opinion,the money.
What i think of myself can be a lot more important than what others think of me.
Designer have to be able to express own thought in the visual. And must know how to explain it to people logically.
New thing is change the world.
The process as vital to personal and social problems.

ReplyDeleteWhile I was watching this movie, I kept thinking the roles of both creators and second-handers in our society.
Creators can come up with something new but they are very determined to do what they want, and refuse to change their mind or be persuaded to do something else.
On the other hand, second-handers can't be creative, but they can be a compromiser.
Actually, I take a little bit dim view of the creators which work alone and can't make a compromise with their clients well.
Because I think that a design is not an art, but is absolutely a customer-oriented job.
That's why we should consider clients' needs when we come up with something ideas.
In my point of view, I think that creators are designers and the role of second-handers is a kind of design management.
Designers should hold their own vision, philosophy, ideas come from his own spirit and also should keep trying to reach a compromise with clients' requirement.
I think it's designer's duties.

ReplyDeletePeter Keating and Howard Roark are just like two characters that is co-existed in one designer. It is possible a designer can be Keating or Roark according to how much the character reveal from inside.
progressive thought of a designer is right or wrong? Or even should be compromised? A designer has to take both of them with balance at last. The design for compromise and the progressive design. The less gap of the two designs, The more high level of design possible.
Could I be that creator? Could I smile looking at the rising elevator with standing on the top of the construction area because of pride of my own design just like Roark?

ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, there are various ways that how find a point of compromise between a designer and an owner when they are given some project.
In the movie, Howard Roark is better to consider owner's point of view. He is so strong and only consider on his way.
Sometimes a designer can be strong , but more important thing is that designer should be flexible for making good process with someone. Because a designer do not do alone without anything connected .
Of course the best way is that both are mixed.

ReplyDeleteAs Howard Roark said, our society is based on individualism. Designers can independently pursue their own judgement, faith, and happiness in this individual society. However, if there is right to seek one's own happiness, one's responsibility should be presupposed.
For that reason, it is more important than ever that designers consider their role and responsibility and have their own VISION.
Thus, designers have to have confirmed attitude with balanced insight, with responsibility.
A Designer doesn't mean an absolutely free creator, but an independent person who creates with their own vision and responsibility.

ReplyDeletethrough this movie, Roark shows his strong artistic ego and integrity as an architect. i totally agree with his rough action as well as his perspective to keep his own philosophy. On the other aspect, however, it seems somewhat unprofessional. i think it is very important to keep designers' own perspective and integrity, but designers should be open-minded.(Compromise and acceptance is different....) Designers should consider in various aspects such as tech, life style, economic or environment. Therefore, the real designer should communicate with public and provide a creation which can be showed one's perspective naturally.

However, through this movie, I started to change my mind. Roark’s speech shows us to be a good designer. I was impressed by his strong belief. In spite of poor surrounding, he sticks to his unfailing faith.
I realized that I have to make my own conviction of design so that I can’t falter in my determination in every situation.

ReplyDeleteI admire Howard Roark’s strong confident toward to his own idea and belief. Not that many people has that much of strong confident toward to oneself when everyone says no. However, I don’t believe one can be always right about everything. I admire Howard always believes himself and never gives up on himself, but I don’t think he was right. There are many designers who compromise and don’t have their own ideas because they just follow fame and recognition. I also think they are not a designer and they are only a businessman. Then, what would be the right attitude of designer? Designer, who always struggles to find what is right, is good designer. Sometime, designer should know when to listen, designer should know when to humble, and designer better know when to fight for one’s idea. Howard Roark might be a brilliant architect and designer but he is a person who does not know how to communicate and compromise with others. He only knows not to compromise but he doesn’t know how to communicate.

Throughout the film, the writer is showing the importance of individualism.
The public of an emphasis on community groups in society against tyranny for freedom and independence hero proves the importance of Howard Roark's struggle.
In this sense, the designer's personal stubbornness and affirmative individualism is a positive one for any society must be respected and maintained.

ReplyDeleteThis movie gives me an opportunity to think what designer’s role is and some question about it.
In my opinion, designer should have his/her strong ego and flexible attitude as well.
It could seem that it’s contradictory.
Essentially, designers must have their firm idea or way to think something.
If they don’t have it, they’ll be in trouble when they build a creation.
Because designer’ sprit is reflected to his/her creation. So if idea is not strong enough, designers can’t make their creation.
This point of view, Howord Rock shows us a good example of designer’s strong ego.
His stubborn way as a designer is very impressive and it’s a good chance for me to think designer’s role privately.
On the other hand, I think flexible attitude is important thing that designers need. Because designer also one of member in society and creation could come from various factors and filed through open mind.
Now I’m in a question between designer’s ego and flexible attitude.
Even though I don’t find clear answer about this, I guess that the combination of both parts is the way to close answer.

ReplyDeleteWhat's the most important thing in our life? money, soul, fame, authority etc. If so what's the most important thing to be a good designer? I asked to myself when I saw that movie. He didn't compromise with anyone in his spirit even though his life was poor. I would admire him because he kept his soul and standards and finally he accomplished his works. In my situation I couldn't do it. In this movie I realized that impossible is nothing and designer's soul is very important. I would like to change a word 'impossible' to 'i am possible'as somebody said.

ReplyDeleteHoward is such an persistent person. He rejected demands revising it partially. I absolutely agree with designers with responsibility and firm belief regarding their artworks. Unfortunately, it is not true when it comes to business design in Korea. There is limit to argue his opinion as a designer. Designer should get through if they keep their artworks. And, if it is not completely getting through, then they should make a compromise with others. I consider that it is impossible to be successful designer with confidence only, unless well-known and famous. It is one of important attitudes to find out a meeting point and come to an agreement. When you are sincerely confidence with your artwork, you make people understood.

Even though people have own design tastes, they usually hesitate to show their idea and feeling because they are not sure whether it is right or not. But we can’t say designer is always right. Just they know more and they know exactly what they’re doing. So they have to respect other’s opinion and compromise with others. Of course they should have own ego and design philosophy.

ReplyDeleteNowadays customers are participated in the design process very deeply and in detail. UCC and DIY is the dominant trend in industry which decide their design as a key factor.
But ironically there are still the leaders in design which create customers desire only by design just like ipod.
As a designer I wanna be a creator who can open the new area or concept to customers.

ReplyDeleteI think he was a lonely man. He was smart person about architecture but nobody(just few people) understand he's work.
He's the man who had a strong opinion, and also smart person, sometimes people(manager, general people) do not understand the person. It's very important thing to stick their own opinion and struggle with the others who opposite the opinion.
